In 2008, María Sanz Esteve, founder of Dunes Films, made her directorial debut with the short film Serendipity, filmed in Fuerteventura and produced by Dunes Films in association with Sebastián Álvarez and Ventura Films, with sponsorship from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Fuerteventura Island Council. This universal story, set in the 1950s, follows the journey of young Carmencita through the desert in search of food, a metaphor for life where hope and fear intertwine, reminding us of the importance of our connection with nature and the human capacity to overcome difficulties. As Sanz Esteve explains, “Serendipity is a reminder for those who feel secure on their technological throne [and] forget that we are part of nature,” inviting reflection on our relationship with the world and celebrating human resilience in a breathtaking Canarian landscape.
