Carmela Umpiérrez Figueroa
The article in the Diario de Fuerteventura features Carmela Umpiérrez Fajardo, an 88-year-old woman from Villaverde who has published “Lo que mi memoria alcanza” (What My Memory Reaches), a book compiling her folk poems as part of the ‘Alas de la Memoria’ (Wings of Memory) project. The work is a tribute to rural Fuerteventura during her time, encompassing memories of childhood and youth, as well as reflections on current events, emigration to Venezuela, and peasant wisdom. It rescues the island’s living memory and popular culture thanks to the initiative of María Sanz and her team, who seek to create intergenerational bonds and highlight the life stories of the elderly.
